Coming Home For Christmas
Christmas is coming, and most of you will be forced to venture home, sit down at the dinner table, and tell your loved ones what you’ve been working on.
Christmas is coming, and most of you will be forced to venture home, sit down at the dinner table, and tell your loved ones what you’ve been working on.
You have two choices:
Option 1: You make your parents proud
You go and do the MBA.
You get the consultancy job.
You become a junior dev.
You get another degree.
You join a big corporation that wears jeans every Friday.
You’re poor, but… comp season is coming soon. Right…? Right…?
And you have social insurance and 20$ per month in your pension fund.
Option 2: You become an outright disappointment
They have no idea what you’re talking about and gently motivate you to spend your time on something else.
In other words. You’re a disappointment.
In the first point, you’re betting on a societal structure and monetary system that won’t be around in the next 10 years (or at least a frightening shadow of how things are currently looking).
You might make 2-10k per month. But you’re still poor. You don’t own equity. You don’t even own the money in your bank account. You’re just really fucked.
You’re competing with overeducated and overintelligent high achievers from elite universities. They’re probably smarter than you, they have more experience.
And even if you get the managing director of some hedge fund that nobody ever heard of. You’re 35, you have no family, no hair, and no money.
Second point.
You go into an industry that is laughed at, pointed fingers at, and ridiculed by those who get “comp”.
But… that sketchy industry is still worth over a trillion dollars. If you start doing stuff, you’re “One of The 300” as we like to say. There’s no competition. A wide open space.
An example of a “disappointment”.
There’s this kid called Maverick in our community.
He’s from Nigeria. No formal university education to speak of. But a whole lot of grit.
He chose a micro-niche (Defi on Metis). Ever heard of Metis? Us neither.
3 weeks ago he started posting around the niche. 1 post per day.
Yesterday they signed a partnership deal with him and he became an official ambassador for the blockchain.
They will pay him in $metis tokens, they will fly him out to events, and he will become an official spokesperson.
Soon all the projects on Metis will want to work with him.
He will get some tokens in exchange for providing distribution, some might work out, some not.
The ones that work out, he will make crazy money. Un-imaginable amounts for a Web2 Organ Donor (more about this one soon).
The only downside… he has to return home and tell his parents that he’s working in Web3 (something that sounds like a scam). Writing about Defi (something they don’t understand). On Metis (something they don’t understand).
Simple rule:
If your mother understands what you do.
Or….
If your mother is proud of what you do.
You will be screwed in 10 years.
You still have 2 months until Christmas.
Good things are coming,
